Jessie Matthews – Film Pictorial Magazine October 1935

In 1935 Jessie Matthews had been ill for some time. We are not told why. This article charts her comeback with her husband Sonnie Hale. They appeared in several films together.

From a family of seven girls and four boys, Jessie was a chorus girl at the age of 15. What a way to start a career!

I have also been alerted to a charming recording on You Tube. Jessie Matthews singing Look for the Silver Lining. It’s just lovely.

John Wayne Career Review Picture Show Magazine April 1935

Raoul Walsh, film director and western enthusiast really liked the way Duke Morrison moved, or rather walked. A real cowboys’ walk. He employed Duke, renamed him John Wayne, and the rest is history.

This article is a nice summary of John Wayne’s career to date, as at April 1935. Produced to promote his latest film, Randy Rides Alone.

Picture Show Magazine April 1935

It’s 1935 and Fred and Ginger are almost at the height of their fame.

Here is a lovely article promoting their film The Gay Divorce. Once again, beautiful sets, dresses and dancing alongside an amusing and gentle romance. As it says, the film is “a poem of grace and rhythm”

Ginger Rogers on the Cover of Film Weekly Magazine May 1935

It’s 1935 and Ginger Rogers publicity machine is working overtime. This is the year that she co-starred in Top Hat and was refining her image and style with Fred Astaire. Interestingly, the movie magazines at the time do not feature many stories or pictures of Fred on his own. Any ideas why this is so?

Waddingtons Careers Game – Scoring Sheet 1955

Waddingtons Careers Game Scoring Sheet

Waddingtons Careers Game Scoring Sheet

Back in 1955, when the family had finished reading their copy of Picture Show or Picturegoer magazine and decided that there were no movies to see that week, they might have chosen to play the family board game of Careers.

Produced by Waddingtons, the game called for each player to decide on their career success formula by choosing a variety of combinations of Fame, Happiness and Money as their target. Then the play commenced. On each circuit of the board players can collect experience, earn opportunities and then accumulate Hearts, Stars or Money by participating in a variety of careers. On the way through players can enter university and achieve better access to careers and higher salaries.

We played the game last night and it is good fun, but the score-sheets are hard to come by, so I have reproduced one here for fellow Careers enthusiasts to print and use.

Having fun, Arthur.

Ginger Rogers Costumes from Top Hat – Film Pictorial Magazine August 1935

Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire starred in the classic 1935 dance movie – Top Hat. There is not much more that we can say about that film here, except to assure you that if you have not seen it you are really missing out. It is without doubt, one of the most endearingly funny and impressive films of the 1930′s.

The article featured in this blog is, however, a little different. You probably know the story about “the dress” and Fred’s alleged irritation with the feathers that flew in all directions as they danced. Oddly, it does not appear in the article, but eight other outfits do.

I wonder what impact this type of fashion article had on the fashions of the day. If you have an insight into the influence of 1930′s film stars on fashion, please do tell us via the comments box on this blog.
